Why Brittany Tompkins Added a Furniture Line to Her Interior Design Business

Last year, Brittany Tompkins faced major furniture shipment delays for her interior design company MP James. With record shortages, delays, and freighters waiting to dock for months, Tompkins had to make a major pivot to satisfy customers and keep his design business alive. Taking matters into her own hands, she launched her own line of furniture, MP James. Because everything is made local, Tompkins is able to reduce turnaround times from six to nine months to as little as six weeks. “Due to supply chain delays at ports, I realized I had to find another solution. We have been working on our line since spring 2021 and have been able to partner with some amazing local artisans. intentionally designed each item as a piece I would put in the home of any of my clients,” Tompkins explained. “Starting my line was solely a decision to ensure my clients received high quality materials. quality that support our local communities.”

Tompkins is no stranger to the pivot. Coming from a long line of strong women in real estate, she followed in her grandmother’s footsteps as a project design manager at a real estate development company. Realizing that her passion was interior design, she took a leap of faith and started her own design company MP James Design in 2019. “MP James represents the maiden names of the women in my life. M for (Monforte) which is my maiden name, P for (Praino) which is my mother’s and James was my grandmother’s maiden name and also my grandfather’s name. My grandmother and my mother owned and still own their own businesses, which has always been an inspiration in my life,” Tompkins shared of the inspiration behind the name. MP James Design was born out of a desire to create a female-focused interior design and construction company.

With a contemporary West Coast ethos using wood tones and textures, Tompkins has had over 50 clients with projects from full home renovation commercial projects and everything in between. Over the past year, she’s also added a new mainstay to her business and launched an online store selling homewares that are all made or designed by US-based companies. Some of his most favorite projects include everything from a total house renovation to elevating Ashley Greene’s office space. “To date, my favorite project would be the Valcroft project I did for a full house renovation. We mixed mid-century tones with farmhouse feels and ended up with a beautiful family home. A smaller project that I loved doing is Ashley Greene’s office. We used some amazing textures when it came to custom wallpapers and fabrics for her furniture!” Tompkins explained. “Working with Brittany and the MP JAMES has been a wonderful and eye-opening experience, able to meld a beautiful mix of Paul and my styles – elevating the pieces while still staying true to what we would like our home to represent,” Greene explained of her work with Tompkins and Congressman James to redo his office.

While Tompkins still practices real estate, which is how she was able to grow her design business so quickly, she is focused heavily on expanding the product arm of MP James. “We are currently working on expanding our range! This will include accent chairs, dining tables, pillows, blankets, candles, etc. We want to develop our own range in a one-stop shop. We are also working on some amazing interior design projects right now which should be released in early 2022,” she said.
